An Inertial Navigation System (INS) therefore is a technology based on the use of accelerations and gyrometers to determine the location, attitude, and speed of a moving body without resorting to other aids like the GPS. It works on the principle of integrating the accelerations and the rotations concerning a certain base reference. INS can be configured as strap-down and gimballed systems or in other words as non-stabilized and stabilized systems. Strapdown INS has the characteristics of integration with the vehicle and compactness, and gimballed INS has higher precision sensors. These are: self-navigation, short-range precision, and the ability to work in areas where GPS is not dominant. They are applied in aerospace, marine vessel navigation, military combatant vehicles, and also in robotics for accurate location and navigation.
