In a groundbreaking achievement, Altilium, a UK-based clean technology group, and the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) have successfully collaborated to produce the UK's first electric vehicle (EV) battery cells using recycled cathode active materials (CAM). This milestone marks a significant step towards developing a circular economy for EV batteries, reducing reliance on imported raw materials, and decreasing the carbon footprint of battery manufacturing.
The collaboration between Altilium and UKBIC is pivotal in advancing sustainable EV battery production. By utilizing Altilium's proprietary EcoCathode™ process, over 95% of critical battery metals, including lithium, nickel, and cobalt, are recovered from end-of-life EV batteries. These metals are then upcycled into high-nickel NMC 811 CAM, which is ready for reuse in new batteries. This process not only supports the UK's transition to net zero but also aligns with upcoming EU Battery Regulations, which require minimum levels of recycled lithium, nickel, and cobalt in new EV batteries from 2031.
This innovative collaboration offers several benefits for both the UK economy and environment:
Altilium is planning to expand its operations with the construction of the ACT4 recycling plant in Teesside. This facility will have the capacity to process waste from over 150,000 vehicles annually, producing 30,000 tonnes of CAM. This output is expected to meet nearly 20% of the UK's anticipated demand by 2030, positioning the UK as a leader in sustainable battery production.
The collaboration between Altilium and UKBIC represents a crucial step towards achieving full battery circularity in the UK. By pioneering the use of recycled materials in EV battery production, they are not only contributing to a more sustainable future but also setting a precedent for the global battery industry. As the world moves towards electric vehicles, innovations like these will be essential in ensuring that the transition is both environmentally friendly and economically viable.
